GINNY CHING-YIN LO
is the founder and artistic director of Identity Performing Arts. Her choreography attempts to fuse ballet, modern, traditional dance and improvisation, often collaborating with live musicians. Her dance journey detours from her first love, ballet to modern. It is her mission to glorify and demonstrate Christ's love through dance as vessel of His transforming power.
Lo is also a dance educator, she started her early teaching career with the Chicago School District from 1st Grade to 8th Grade, then she taught at the Lombard Dance Center as a ballet teacher and choreographer of both the Senior and Junior Ballet Company for 7 years. Her choreography won numerous awards in dance competitions. She continued to teach as a freelance teacher and coach in Chicagoland.
In 2007 she moved to Shanghai and continued to teach dance with the International Home School Association. Lo led a Migrant Workers Performing Troupe and produced multiple full length performances to share the love of God with the underserved migrant workers' community. She was on faculty with the Tongji University Dance Education in Shanghai until she repatriated back to Chicago in 2011. Then she continues creating dance works and presents in China, France and Germany. Lo also ministers in dance with numerous churches and Christian conferences and currently she serves as the dance department head of Karitos Christian Association.
Lo was born in Hong Kong where she received her early classical ballet training and studied under the former artistic director of Hong Kong Ballet, Chu Kai-Shun. In Chicago, she studied with Elizabeth Boitsov, Homer Bryan and Peter Wong. She performed as a guest artist in Wheaton College Dance Festival along with Peter.
Prior to choreographing and dancing in her own artistic endeavors, she had danced as a member of Illinois Ballet Theatre, Boitsov Classical Ballet and New York Modern Dance Company "H.T. Chen & Dancers" (Chicago cast). She danced as a guest artist in the Hong Kong Dance Festival, and performed in DanceChicago with Links Hall. She performed in various venues including Chicago Cultural Center, Museum of Science & Industry, DuncanYMCA Chernin Center for the Arts.
Lo holds a BA in Dance from Columbia College and a MA in communication & culture from Trinity International University. She is also a panelist speaker for "Culture and The City" for the Northwestern University undergraduate department, Asian Female organization "Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority". Her co-choreographed work "Identically Dissimilar" was nominated for the Chicago Dance Achievement Awards in 2004.
Lo is not a one-dimensional artist and is always finding new venues for her artistic expressions. She is also an actress and singer. She performed a singing role in the Insights Art Festival 2004 besides presenting her own choreography.. Her last trip to Beijing and Hong Kong rekindled her strong passion for Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy and inspired her to refine these ancient art forms in her own hand, having learned these art forms as a student in Hong Kong. She retained a strong foundation of Chinese character's structure and frame, meanwhile, developing her own style.
